Grigor Dimitrov advances to US Open semi-finals by stunning Roger Federer

2019 Sep 4

World No. 78, Grigor Dimitrov, nicknamed “Baby Fed” in his youth because of the similarities between his all-court game and Federer’s, defeated the five-time US Open champion in a five-set match on Tuesday night.

Former World No. 3, Grigor Dimitrov has claimed a spot in the US Open semi-finals with a shock 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-2 victory in 3 hours and 12 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Bulgarian has denied Roger Federer a chance at a first Flushing Meadows title in 11 years.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer explained an upper back issue gave him trouble and forced him to receive treatment ahead of the last set in his surprise US Open defeat to Dimitrov, but congratulated the 28-year-old on his shocking upset.

The 2017 World Tour Finals champion scored one of the biggest wins of his career on Tuesday night and his first victory in eight previous tries over the Swiss.

World No. 3, Federer would have become the oldest man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final since Jimmy Connors at age 39 at the 1991 US Open.

What’s next?

Grigor Dimitrov will face in-form fifth seed and Cincinnati Masters champion Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final after the Russian beat 2016 US Open winner Stan Wawrinka in four sets earlier on Tuesday.

With Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer out, Rafael Nadal is the strong favourite to lift the trophy, remaining the only player in the draw who has won a major title or even played in a final.
