Manchester United secured a 1-0 victory over Kazakh side Astana in their Europa League Group L opener at Old Trafford on Thursday as Mason Greenwood bagged his first competitive goal in the Red Devils shirt.
The 17-year-old striker Mason Greenwood opened the scoring in the 73rd minute and made history with his impressive strike at Old Trafford as he became the club’s youngest ever goalscorer in European competition. The teenager, who turns 18 in 12 days’ time, beat George Best by 170 days.
Born in October 2001, Greenwood is the first player born in the 2000s to net a senior goal for Manchester United.
Greenwood’s lovely goal was enough to give Man United the three points against Kazakhstan champions Astana.
Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed his delight at Mason Greenwood grabbing his first senior goal for United. The young Englishman made his Premier League debut this past March for Manchester United in the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
“We always know that in and around the box that he’s one of the best finishers we’ve got and I’m happy he got his goal. I’m sure he’ll go home tonight and he’ll be happy with that one.”
Both teams return to the Europa League on October 3 as United make a trip to AZ Alkmaar and Astana host Partizan Belgrade.
