Coming to the Ballon d’Or, no player has won more awards than the two prolific goal scorers of the modern era, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Players from Barcelona, Juventus, PSG, and Liverpool are in contention this year to win the desired award.
Europe's top five leagues have come to an end and the champions of Spain, Italy, France, Germany and England have been decided. Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Manchester City have come out on top in their respective leagues, but none of them will lift the coveted Champions League trophy. However, Champions League plays a decisive role in the voting process.
Let’s take a look at the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or award this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) no. 5
Juventus star, CR7 is not new to winning this award, but his chances of winning a sixth Ballon d'Or are very slim. The Portuguese has helped the Old Lady to an eighth successive Serie A title, but the five-time Ballon d'Or winner failed to inspire his side to the Champions League title.
Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain) no. 4
Kylian Mbappe has had a remarkable domestic season, but failed to inspire his side in the Champions League. The youngster has played a crucial role in PSG's inevitable Ligue 1 win, which is the only title the club has won this season.
Sadio Mane (Liverpool) no. 3
Liverpool star, Sadio Mane ended the season as one of the three winners of the Premier League Golden Boot, sharing the coveted prize with teammate Mohamed Salah and Arsenal frontman Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, with 22 goals each.
This season marks the Senegalese's best goal-scoring season, which will surely play a role in the voting process for the Ballon d'Or.
Lionel Messi (Barcelona) no. 2
Barca’s captain, Lionel Messi started out as the overwhelming favourite to win a record sixth Ballon d'Or. Even though Liverpool denied Barcelona the chance to book a spot in the Champions League final, the Argentine has guided Barcelona to another La Liga title in Spain.
Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) no. 1
The Reds star, Virgil van Dijk has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the football world and has been the commanding presence holding the Liverpool defence together all season. The 27-year-old is the Premier League favourite to win the Ballon d'Or.
If the Dutchman can lead Liverpool to Champions League title in Madrid, he has every chance to win the Ballon d’Or award.
